Everyone’s like “those Germans have a word for everything” but English has a word for tricking someone into watching the music video for Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up.

English has a lot more words created for very specific phenomena! It’s not just rick-rolling. Language is always evolving and it’s super interesting! Here’s a list of hyper-specific/untranslatable words in English.

My expectations weren’t met, they were exceeded.

because no amount of gifs could do this scene justice

“Yass queen” with a completely emotionless face will always be the best line of the whole series.

This is so advanced tho.

Let go of control. Let go of the useless emotions that cause self sabotage such as anxiety ,jealousy and anger. Just be in the moment. Enjoy your time in this form.

Most people really do care about animals. That’s why the animal welfare approach resonates. It tells them that they can care and that they can continue to exploit. We should focus on their caring and be honest with them: caring means going vegan; caring means no more exploitation.

holy fuck you guys

after years of being vaguely confused when I came across the measurement “a stick of butter” in recipes, today I learned that in the United States they sell butter in these skinny stick things:

image

it is literally a stick of butter. A STICK OF BUTTER.

i have literally never seen butter sold this way. each stick one only amounts to ½ a cup of butter AMERICANS PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT MY WHOLE LIFE WHEN I SAW THE PHRASE “A STICK OF BUTTER” IN RECIPES I WAS IMAGINING THIS:

image

THIS IS THE ONLY “STICK” I’D EVER SEEN BUTTER SOLD IN. I THOUGHT Y’ALL WERE THROWING FUCKIN’ POUNDS UPON POUNDS OF BUTTER INTO THINGS HOLY JESUS THE WORLD MAKES SO MUCH MORE SENSE NOW FUCKIN CHRIST.

I love little foreign confusion things like this

Wait what is butter usually sold in??

Yo this and the fact that OUR TABLESPOON MEASUREMENTS ARE DIFFERENT. Like fuck, how many recipes have I screwed up by putting in too much of some ingredient because our tablespoons are bigger.

In Australia our tablespoons are 20ml, or 4 teaspoons. In some other countries (like the US?), it’s 15ml, or 3 teaspoons.

Who decided this??? When I read a recipe I have no idea what tablespoon it refers to. If I bought the book in my country it must be 20ml right??? Right???? If I read it online then who the fuck knows. Not me.
